    I have been tasked with finding information on Captain Samuel Travis the namesake for our new facility at Training Center Yorktown. He was captured and his sword returned during a battle on the York river in 1813.

      William:
      Stuart Butler in his book, “Defending The Old Dominion; Virginia and Its Militia In the War of 1812” pages 221 & 222 gives details of the battle. Pages 242,247,248,251 of the book give more information about Travis. He indicates a primary source is from the House of Delegates Journal of 3 March 1849. Other sources are the Calendar of Virginia State Papers,volume X, page 229. All of these are of course at the Library of Virginia and various other Virginia libraries
